What's Your Readiness?
I am not an expert in home survival by any means, however I am an avid researcher. I have spent the last year making sure that my family is prepared for a major event that could put most everything out of commission for an extended period and essential services like power, water, and food are unavailable. Here’s what I’ve learned:
1. Water Storage and Purification: Store at least one gallon of water per person per day. Have water purification methods ready.
2. Food Supplies: Stock non-perishable food items that require no cooking or minimal preparation, such as canned goods, dried fruits, nuts, and energy bars.
3. Emergency Lighting: Have multiple sources of light such as flashlights, battery-powered lanterns, and candles.
4. First Aid Kit and Medications: Keep a well-stocked first aid kit and a supply of any necessary prescription medications.
5. Communication Plan: Have a battery-powered or hand-crank radio to receive news updates. Establish a plan for communicating with family members.
6. Warmth and Shelter: Ensure you have enough blankets, sleeping bags, and warm clothing.
7. Sanitation Supplies: Stock up on items like toilet paper, wet wipes, garbage bags, and hand sanitizer. Plan for how you will manage without running water.
8. Emergency Tools and Supplies: Have tools like a multi-tool, duct tape, and a knife. Consider items for emergency repairs at home.
9. Portable Power Sources: Keep portable chargers or solar chargers for your cell phone and other small electronics.
10. Mental Preparedness and Knowledge: Be mentally prepared for the situation. Have books, games, or other activities for mental health. Know basic survival skills like fire starting, water purification, and first aid.
Remember, the key to effective home survival is preparation and managing your emotions. This post by no means is intended to make people panic or be fearful, it is about educating yourself, so you are prepared as best as possible – applied knowledge is power. We are living in uncertain times, and we must focus on what we can control. Stay safe!
